課程概述

The objective of this course is to give students an overview of research on information systems and management (or IS research for short). Many information systems/technologies deployed in organizations once were considered having strong implications to performance and competitive advantage improvement. In recent years, as information systems/technologies become ubiquitous (not scare), an infrastructure (not proprietary), and a commodity, they become operational and strategic necessity. IS research focuses on the effective and efficient development, deployment, and utilization of information systems/technologies by individuals, groups, organizations, or society for the improvement of economic and social welfare.

In this course, we will cover a broad range of topics related to information systems and management and research methods commonly employed in IS research (e.g., survey, experiment, case study, analytical modeling, design science, etc). Most articles discussed in class are published in top-tier IS journals in recent years. This course will be conducted in the paper-presentation-and-critic format. Through reading and presenting assigned papers, students are expected to gain understanding on contemporary IS research and establish appropriate perception about what research is. On the contrary, through paper critics, students are expected to improve their critical and logical thinking and to develop their competence of finding and justifying interesting research topics, all of which are essential research capability that junior researchers (e.g., doctoral students like you) need to learn.

課程要求

Paper Presentation:
For each assigned article, one student will be assigned as a presenter to provide an overview of the paper. The presenter needs to prepare a 30-minute presentation on the assigned article. In addition, the presenter is expected to prepare a 2-page summary of the assigned article. The 2-page summary and slides of your presentation should be made available to all other students before or on the day of your presentation. Audience is expected to finish the reading and participate in the discussion section.

In this semester, each student is expected to be in charge of two paper presentations. However, the exact number of paper presentations per student depends on the size of the class in this semester.

Paper Critic:
For each assigned article, students will be assigned as discussants to review and criticize the paper. In your paper critic, you should focus on the following issues:
• What are the major contributions of the study?
• What are the shortcomings of the study?
• How can this study be improved?
• Can the assumptions of the study be relaxed? If so, how such relaxation will affect the design of the study?
• Can the research model or technique developed in this study be applied to other domains? If so, whether and how the proposed model or the design of the study need to be revised?

In this semester, each student will be in charge of four paper critics (again, subject to the size of the class in this semester). For each paper critic, the discussant needs to prepare a 5-minute presentation on the assigned article. The discussant also needs to make available of your paper critic slides before or on the day of your presentation.

Term Project:
You are required to undertake a term project related to IS or technology management research. Your term project needs to clearly address a research question and provide useful research results to the target area under investigation. Before you decide the project direction and scope, you
